My name is Lorraine Watson-Parris and I have been running Enjoy Languages since 2010. Two of my biggest passions in life are teaching and languages and so running my own language classes is a never a chore, but a delight.
I moved from the UK to San Diego in 2023 with my husband and two children. It's been a wonderful two years here and I'm ready to resume my language classes.
I am now offering English / ESL, French and Spanish online lessons to learners all over the world - as well as in-person tutoring within the San Diego area.
My teaching career
After earning my UK language teaching degree (PGCE MFL) in 2004, I spent six years teaching French, German and Spanish in UK Secondary schools (the equivalent of a US middle and high-school combined). I supplemented this work by delivering evening language courses at adult education centers. Then in 2009, whilst on maternity leave, I acquired the widely recognized teaching English certificate, Trinity Certificate in TESOL, which gave me the skills to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
The following year, wanting to spend time with my newborn, in 2010 I stepped back from school teaching and set-up Enjoy Languages. The plan was to supplement our family income with a few hours of tutoring a week. However, it became clear that Oxford was ready for more! I ended up running my own French and Spanish clubs in elementary schools, delivering my own courses for adults in their place of work, and setting up Saturday French clubs for children aged 3-11 called Bonjour Lulu.
Eventually, as my then two children grew up, I increased my working hours by returning to school teaching: my experience running my own clubs for younger children led me to working with students aged 4-13 at two private schools in Oxford. I delivered French classes at one school - including implementing my own Bonjour Lulu French clubs. At the second school, I taught English as Second Language (ESL) to students on a 1:1 basis to help them assimilate into the English school system.
My own language journey
As a native English speaker growing up in the UK, I was first introduced to foreign languages at high school where I quickly fell in love with the two languages on offer: French and German. I continued studying both languages right through to college level and graduated from a UK University in 2003 with a 2:1 degree in BA Combined Studies. I majored in French and added some Spanish and English alongside my German courses.
During my college studies, I spent a year abroad to further improve my language skills: I had a fantastic time working as a waitress in Disneyland Paris, a kitchen aide at a French language school in the Cote d’Azur, and as an English Language assistant in a Luxembourg secondary school. Moving to the US has put me on a new, fun journey of learning American English and I am thoroughly enjoying opportunities to use my Spanish skills in San Diego!
Life outside of teaching
Aside from the beautiful weather, the best thing about San Diego is the line dancing community I am part of. We have so much fun line dancing a few times a week and as we travel all over to different events, it's helped me discover even more of San Diego County - and it's even taken me to Vegas for their Line Dancing Explosion event!
I've also been spending time volunteering at my children's schools - including organizing parent social events.
In short, I'm a bubbly and outgoing mum of two who loves to dance and connect with others.
